‎
‎Renowned Nigerian haematologist and geneticist, Adeyinka Gladys Falusi, has been decorated with the prestigious Role Model Award by the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation (HLF), in recognition of her far-reaching contributions to medical science and national development.
‎
‎The honour was conferred during the foundation’s 29th anniversary celebration held at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, where a distinguished gathering of academics, professionals, and industry leaders assembled to celebrate excellence.
‎
‎The ceremony, held on April 18, 2026, spotlighted Professor Falusi as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished scientific minds, whose legacy continues to shape the landscape of healthcare and research.

‎
‎In a statement, HLF Executive Secretary, Patricia Otuedon-Arawore, explained that the award recognises individuals whose professional achievements have made measurable impacts on national growth and development.
‎
‎She described recipients as “Great Nigerian Role Models,” carefully selected for their influence, integrity, and ability to inspire future generations.
‎
‎The recognition crowns decades of groundbreaking work by Professor Falusi in human genetics, particularly her pioneering research on Sickle Cell Disease and Alpha Thalassaemia.
‎
‎Her contributions in these areas have significantly advanced healthcare delivery, not only in Nigeria but across the global scientific community.
‎
‎She was widely commended for her unwavering integrity, dedication, and enduring impact on global health research.
‎Delivering her citation, Oladapo A. Ashiru, former President of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Nigeria, described Falusi as a trailblazer whose work has elevated the frontiers of human genetics across Africa.
‎
‎He also highlighted her longstanding commitment to mentoring young scientists and healthcare professionals, many of whom now hold prominent positions in academia and clinical practice.
‎
‎Adding his voice, Anya O. Anya, former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, hailed the honouree as an icon of excellence and a shining example of women’s advancement in science.
‎
‎He noted that her achievements continue to inspire pride and aspiration within the scientific community.
‎Chairman of the occasion, Emeka Anyaoku, a former Commonwealth Secretary-General, described the HLF award as one of the most respected recognitions in the country.
‎
‎According to him, it is reserved strictly for individuals who have attained the pinnacle of their careers while maintaining exemplary character and integrity.
‎
‎Responding to the honour, Professor Falusi described the award as a testament to a lifetime of dedication, sacrifice, and service to humanity.
‎
‎She expressed deep gratitude to the foundation and reaffirmed her commitment to advancing scientific research and societal development.
‎
‎She also used the opportunity to emphasise the importance of nurturing role models who can guide Nigeria’s younger generation toward excellence.
‎
‎The distinguished scientist further called for increased inclusion of women in leadership roles within academia, science, and research institutions.
‎
‎The event drew widespread commendation from colleagues, community leaders, and professional bodies, all of whom praised her remarkable legacy.
‎
‎Among those who paid tribute, Akinwumi Fajola lauded her continued advocacy for people living with sickle cell disorder and her sustained commitment to public health awareness.
‎
‎Her husband, Abiodun Falusi, alongside their children and grandchildren, expressed pride in her accomplishments, describing her as a symbol of resilience, excellence, and purpose.
‎
‎With this latest recognition, Professor Falusi joins an elite circle of distinguished Nigerians, including Grace Alele-Williams and Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, further cementing her legacy as one of the nation’s foremost scientific icons.
